The promotional campaign for “Resident Evil Requiem” has heavily relied on nostalgia, featuring the return of fan-favorite character Leon Kennedy to Raccoon City, the iconic setting where the series originated. In this ninth main installment, Capcom has fine-tuned its gameplay to near-perfection.
The game delivers bone-chilling scares and thrilling action sequences, although at times, the integration of these elements feels disjointed, resulting in an adventure that hesitates to explore new territories. The narrative kicks off with FBI agent Grace Ashcroft investigating mysterious deaths at a condemned hotel, where she encounters the antagonist Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella employee responsible for the zombie outbreak.
As Grace navigates the labyrinthine Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, reminiscent of classic “Resident Evil” environments, players solve puzzles, evade unique zombie enemies, and scavenge for survival items. Meanwhile, Leon pursues Gideon while battling his own mysterious illness, engaging in intense combat scenarios akin to past series iterations.
While the early segments shine with atmospheric tension and strategic gameplay, the later stages somewhat falter in comparison, revisiting familiar settings like sewers and labs. A new addition includes a journey to Raccoon City’s ruins, introducing open areas and fast-paced zombie encounters. The game’s narrative focuses on uncovering the mystery surrounding Elpis, with character development for Grace and introspection from Leon adding depth to the experience.
Despite some shortcomings, “Resident Evil Requiem” excels in delivering a compelling gameplay experience that pays homage to the series’ legacy. With a blend of old and new elements, the game offers a must-play entry for fans, emphasizing closure over groundbreaking innovation.
“Resident Evil Requiem” launches on various platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Sony PlayStation 5, targeting a mature audience.
