Chief Justice Richard Wagner emphasized Canada’s significance as a “democratic superpower” during the opening ceremony of the Supreme Court’s judicial year. He underscored the crucial role of the legal community in upholding the rule of law and judicial independence as essential defenses against tyranny and autocracy.
The ceremony marked the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court and highlighted the enduring principles of the rule of law, an independent judiciary, and equal access to justice. Wagner urged participants to uphold these principles firmly and fearlessly, emphasizing their vital role in shaping Canadian jurisprudence and institutions.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Supreme Court justices introduced new ceremonial black robes with red accents, symbolizing a commitment to openness and accessibility. Wagner also announced the establishment of a Supreme Court historical society to preserve its legacy through research, education, and public engagement.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser stressed the importance of defending democracy, institutions, and the rule of law in the face of global challenges. He called on all Canadians to take ownership of democracy and safeguard fundamental rights to ensure a strong and free Canada for future generations.
