“Tech Journalist Exposes Big AI’s Global Power Grab”

Tech journalist Karen Hao, formerly an engineer in Silicon Valley, is now a vocal critic of the AI industry’s relentless pursuit of artificial general intelligence and relentless expansion. According to Hao, tech giants have established a global power structure that prioritizes data and intellectual property acquisition at the expense of human rights and the environment.

In a recent public talk at the University of Toronto, hosted by the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology, Hao emphasized the importance of separating AI from empire to safeguard democracy while still reaping its benefits. Her book, “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI,” delves into the repercussions of Big AI’s rapid advancement on a global scale, highlighting the need for more ethical and purpose-driven AI systems.

Hao challenges the prevailing perception of AI companies as mere providers of products and services, likening them to modern empires accruing unprecedented economic and political influence. Drawing parallels to historical empires, she highlights how these tech entities appropriate resources, exploit labor, monopolize knowledge production, and justify their actions under moral pretenses.

The journalist advocates for a shift away from the current model of AI development, particularly critiquing large-scale general-purpose systems like ChatGPT, which she believes impose significant societal costs. Hao calls for a reevaluation of AI technologies to prioritize those with greater societal benefits and minimize harms.
