Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty to Parents’ Murders

Share

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, formally denied allegations of fatally stabbing his parents by entering a not guilty plea on Monday to two counts of first-degree murder after more than two months since the tragic incident. Represented by his new attorney Kimberly Greene, Reiner, the third child of Rob Reiner, has been in custody without bail since his immediate arrest following the discovery of his parents’ bodies on December 14 in their Brentwood residence in Los Angeles.

Appearing in a secured custody area during the court proceedings, Reiner, sporting a shaved head and light facial hair, dressed in brown jail attire. While conversing briefly with his lawyer through the glass, he maintained a calm demeanor and only responded affirmatively when asked if he waived his right for a swift progression of the case. Notably, he appeared without the suicide prevention garment he wore during his initial court appearance in December, marking the postponed plea entry due to various case-related complexities, including a recent change in defense attorneys.

The judge scheduled Reiner’s next court appearance for April 29 to plan a preliminary hearing, where the prosecution will present evidence for assessment by a new presiding judge to determine if the case warrants a trial. The ongoing legal proceedings will be overseen by seasoned Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta, recognized for handling notable cases, although none have garnered as much national media attention as Reiner’s situation.

District attorney Nathan Hochman mentioned outside the courtroom that the decision on seeking the death penalty for Reiner remains pending, pending a thorough evaluation of both aggravating and mitigating factors. Reiner’s plea of not guilty aligns with the standard procedure for defendants at this stage, following the departure of his previous high-profile attorney Alan Jackson due to undisclosed circumstances in January.

Authorities have refrained from disclosing potential motives, maintaining a low profile on case details, which has left crucial inquiries surrounding the tragic incident unanswered publicly. While awaiting a comprehensive autopsy report, the prosecution has provided all evidence to the defense, as Reiner and his family continue to navigate the complex legal proceedings amidst the loss of his renowned parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
