The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and BBC issued apologies on Monday for a racial slur that was accidentally broadcast during the live airing of Sunday’s event while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo from the movie “Sinners” were on stage.

The individual who shouted the offensive remark, a Tourette syndrome advocate, expressed deep regret, emphasizing that his outburst did not reflect his personal beliefs.

The incident occurred as Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, both Black actors, were presenting the award for best visual effects at the BAFTA awards ceremony. Host Alan Cumming informed the audience about the presence of John Davidson, an advocate for Tourette syndrome who inspired the BAFTA-nominated film “I Swear,” and later apologized for the offensive language used.

Following the incident, the academy issued an apology for the use of hurtful language that can cause distress and pain to many individuals. They commended Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo for their professionalism during the incident.

Tourettes Action, a charity focused on Tourette syndrome, emphasized the importance of understanding the condition, stating that the involuntary tics associated with Tourette syndrome do not reflect an individual’s beliefs, intentions, or character.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary movements or sounds known as tics, which can worsen in situations of excitement or anxiety. The Tourette Association of America notes that a small percentage of individuals with the syndrome may experience coprolalia, a kind of vocal tic involving involuntary swearing or socially unacceptable language.

The BBC, which aired the event, apologized for the unintentional broadcasting of the slur and announced plans to remove the offensive language from the broadcast. The film “I Swear” received two BAFTA awards, including best actor for Robert Aramayo, who portrayed John Davidson in the film.

Neither the film representatives nor the actors, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, have commented on the incident at this time.
