“5-Year-Old Falls Off Disney Cruise Ship in Tragic Photo Mishap”

Share

A young girl, aged five, fell off a Disney Dream cruise ship in June while taking a photo on a porthole railing at her mother’s request, as reported by Florida authorities. The incident, deemed “avoidable” by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office report filed the day after the event, occurred as the ship was returning from the Bahamas to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

The state attorney’s report described the mother’s actions in setting up the photo as “arguably negligent and irresponsible” but concluded that they did not warrant criminal charges. The child and her father were both rescued by the cruise ship staff, with the incident captured on video and shared on TikTok, gaining international attention.

Security footage established a timeline showing the family on deck four when the mother gestured towards the railing, leading to the child falling overboard from a height of approximately 49 feet. The father jumped into the water about 45 seconds later to rescue her. The ship’s rescue boat successfully retrieved both individuals by 11:49, with the child suffering from hypothermia and the father sustaining a spine fracture.

Despite the incident being labeled as “avoidable” by police, no charges were pressed against the mother, as the state attorney’s office determined that her actions, while negligent, did not meet the criteria for criminal negligence. Incidents of passengers falling overboard are rare, accounting for a minute percentage of total passengers and crew, with the majority of cases attributed to intentional or reckless behavior.

In a separate report, it was noted that between 2009 and 2019, only 212 people fell overboard from cruise ships, representing a minimal fraction of passengers and crew. Of those incidents, 28% resulted in rescues, with the causes typically identified as intentional or reckless acts following thorough investigations.
