“Denare Beach Residents Struggle to Rebuild After Devastating Wildfire”

Share

Brittany Holmgren, a lifelong resident of Denare Beach, has faced significant challenges in the wake of a devastating wildfire that swept through the northeastern Saskatchewan village in June. The 33-year-old mother lost her home and workplace in the blaze, leaving her and her two daughters displaced. Holmgren and her children have temporarily moved in with her mother in nearby Flin Flon, Manitoba, while her dogs remain in a camper back in Denare Beach due to accommodation constraints.

The wildfire, which ravaged half of the community, has forced residents like Holmgren to seek new housing options. Rental prices have surged in the aftermath of the disaster, making it difficult for many to find affordable accommodation. Jennifer Hysert, another resident affected by the fire, shared her family’s struggle of living in a camper within a warehouse until they can rebuild.

In response to the housing crisis, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has initiated the placement of temporary trailers in Denare Beach and neighboring Creighton to provide shelter for displaced residents. While some have expressed satisfaction with the temporary housing solution, others, like Holmgren, find the options limited and less appealing.

Village councillor Karen Thomson acknowledged the rising costs of necessities in the area and highlighted the financial strain on the community following the wildfire. The unexpected visit of Premier Scott Moe, whose government faced criticism for its response to the wildfire, left local officials feeling unprepared for crucial discussions on recovery efforts.

Despite the challenges faced by Denare Beach residents, there is a shared determination to rebuild and restore the community. The resilience and optimism of individuals like Thomson reflect a collective belief in the village’s ability to overcome the adversity brought on by the wildfire.
