A father and son duo from Saskatoon embarked on a remarkable road trip spanning over 2,000 kilometers to witness the Toronto Blue Jays confronting the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Sunday night. This game signified the Blue Jays’ first appearance in the ALCS since their defeat to the Cleveland Guardians in 2016.
Rhett Sangster, a devoted baseball enthusiast, and his son Kai decided impulsively to secure tickets for the event last Thursday. Sangster shared that due to the infrequency of the Blue Jays making it to the playoffs and their shared passion for the team, they couldn’t miss this opportunity.
Viewing the game as a significant moment for his son, Sangster and Kai opted for a road trip, eliminating the thought of flying to Toronto. They embarked on a 33-hour journey in their van, making stops for rest every eight to ten hours. The pair stayed with relatives in Winnipeg and camped near Thunder Bay and Sault St. Marie before finally reaching Toronto for the game on Sunday night.
Despite the long drive, their excitement peaked as they witnessed a spirited start to the ALCS with George Springer of the Blue Jays hitting a solo home run in the first inning. This momentous hit marked the first leadoff homer in Blue Jays’ postseason history as confirmed by Major League Baseball.
Although the game concluded with a 3-1 victory for the Seattle Mariners, Kai expressed his delight at the electrifying atmosphere within Toronto’s Roger’s Centre. Sangster highlighted the value of bonding time with his son, emphasizing the importance of creating lasting memories.
The ALCS series against the Seattle Mariners progresses with Game 2 at the Rogers Centre on Monday night before transitioning to Seattle for Game 3 on Wednesday. The father-son duo’s journey underscores their dedication to supporting their beloved Blue Jays team in this thrilling playoff series.
