NASA has completed a successful rehearsal of launch activities for the upcoming Artemis II mission to the moon. The mission will feature Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Victor Glover. The rehearsal successfully counted down to just past T-minus 30 seconds twice, indicating readiness for launch.
Lori Glaze, the acting associate administrator of the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, expressed satisfaction with the smooth countdown during a media conference. She announced a target launch date of March 6 following a successful wet dress rehearsal.
Despite the progress, Glaze emphasized the need for further preparations. The four astronauts will enter a two-week quarantine, with a flight readiness review scheduled by the end of the month.
Previous rocket rehearsals have faced challenges, particularly with fuel leaks. The most recent Artemis II rehearsal encountered a hydrogen leak issue, similar to past missions. However, during the latest rehearsal, NASA successfully loaded the core stage of the rocket with hydrogen without exceeding safety limits.
The upcoming Artemis II launch is planned for early March. The mission aims to test the Orion spacecraft and conduct experiments as part of preparations for Artemis III, a mission to return astronauts to the moon, scheduled for no earlier than 2028.
NASA will hold a media conference to discuss the findings of the wet dress rehearsal on Friday at 11 a.m. ET.
