He emphasized Smallwood’s unwavering dedication to music, attributing it to keeping him going through the years. Noteworthy artists such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Destiny’s Child, and Boyz II Men have performed and recorded Smallwood’s songs over time.

Chaka Khan, expressing her admiration for Smallwood on Facebook, acknowledged his significant impact on her music journey. She credited Smallwood for revolutionizing her approach to gospel music, hailing him as her favorite pianist and commending his enduring influence on subsequent generations.

Smallwood, a music prodigy, was born on Nov. 30, 1948, in Atlanta, showcasing exceptional piano skills from a young age. Raised in Washington, D.C., primarily by his mother and stepfather, who was a pastor, Smallwood’s musical talents flourished. His tenure at Howard University saw him excel in music, where he co-founded the university’s gospel choir, setting the stage for his groundbreaking contributions to gospel music.

Post-graduation, Smallwood’s musical journey continued as he founded the Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977, infusing traditional gospel with a contemporary twist. Notably, his creation ‘Total Praise’ emerged as a modern gospel anthem touching diverse audiences worldwide, solidifying his place in the annals of gospel music history.

In his later years, health challenges limited Smallwood’s ability to create music, with his Vision choir members providing him with care and support. Despite his physical decline, Smallwood’s enduring legacy, marked by his soul-stirring compositions, continues to resonate with fans and fellow musicians. Chaka Khan expressed anticipation of a heavenly reunion with Smallwood, underscoring the profound impact he had on the world of music.
