Toronto Blue Jays newcomer Trey Yesavage, who kicked off the 2025 season in the lower leagues, is set to take the mound for Game 2 of the American League Division Series versus the New York Yankees. Manager John Schneider revealed this decision ahead of Saturday’s series opener. Yesavage, a right-handed pitcher, will face off against Yankees’ left-hander Max Fried on Sunday.
Upon receiving the news, Yesavage expressed his excitement, stating that he was “beyond floored” and found it “awesome.” The 22-year-old was drafted by Toronto as the No. 20 pick in the previous year’s amateur draft. Throughout this season, he swiftly progressed through four minor league levels before joining the Blue Jays. In September, he managed a 1-0 record in three starts for the team.
Reflecting on his journey, Yesavage shared, “I’ve had a diverse experience this year, playing for five different teams and meeting the entire organization. However, being in this position now, I couldn’t have asked for a better scenario.”
Yesavage’s pitching performances have been notable, as he did not exceed five innings in any of his three starts with Toronto. His signature split-finger fastball led him to set a Blue Jays record by striking out nine Rays batters in his MLB debut. While he faced Tampa Bay twice and Kansas City once, the Yankees are yet to see him in action.
New York’s manager, Aaron Boone, acknowledged Yesavage’s talent, saying, “So far I only know a little bit about him, that he’s good. The split is real. I’ve heard he’s a guy that’s kind of unfazed by being up here in big spots.” Blue Jays outfielder George Springer also commended Yesavage for his composure as a rookie, noting his calm demeanor and maturity on the field.
Looking ahead, right-hander Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young awardee with Cleveland, is slated to start Game 3 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, as announced by Schneider. Carlos Rodon is expected to be the starting pitcher for New York in that matchup. Schneider explained the decision to start Yesavage at home, allowing Bieber the away game start to keep Yesavage available for various roles later in the series.
