Windsor’s Sandwich Town, situated between the busiest border crossing in North America and the forthcoming Gordie Howe International Bridge, is at a pivotal moment of change. Residents are optimistic about the potential for growth and economic rejuvenation in the area.
Krystal Lynn Ouellette, a long-time resident of Sandwich, has observed the transformation of the neighborhood over the past two decades. She expressed hope that the new bridge under construction since 2018 will bring positive changes to Sandwich. Concerns raised by Ouellette and other residents include the absence of essential services like grocery stores, post offices, and gas stations in the town.
Ouellette envisions a future with more amenities such as community centers, dance studios, and a variety of shops to cater to the anticipated increase in traffic due to the bridge. While acknowledging the ongoing improvements on Sandwich Street resulting from the bridge project, Ouellette believes the neighborhood infrastructure still needs enhancements to accommodate the expected influx of visitors.
Tyler Dwayne McMenemy, another resident near the bridge, sees the potential for economic growth in Sandwich with the bridge’s completion. He hopes that the city will continue beautifying the neighborhood to create a positive first impression for visitors. McMenemy emphasized the importance of maintaining the streets and roads to avoid giving a rundown impression to passersby.
Heather Grondin, the chief relations officer at the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, highlighted the positive impacts of the bridge project on the Sandwich community. The redevelopment of Sandwich Street, including new infrastructure and community enhancements, is already visible. The project aims to create a vibrant area for both residents and visitors, with investments in landscaping and gathering spaces.
Grondin emphasized the collaborative efforts with numerous partners to deliver various projects in Sandwich. She expressed pride in the project’s contributions to the historic community and its residents. While an official opening date for the Gordie Howe International Bridge is yet to be determined, the ongoing developments signify a promising future for Sandwich Town.
