“Winter Storm Hits Northern Manitoba: Heavy Snow and Strong Winds Cause Havoc”

Share

A significant winter storm has hit northern Manitoba, causing heavy snowfall and strong winds. Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning predicting over 30 centimeters of snow in some areas. The hardest-hit regions are expected to be along a line from Flin Flon through Thompson. Other areas in the warning zone may experience snowfall amounts of 10-25 cm. Wabowden and Pukatawagan are expected to get more than 20 cm of snow, while Lynn Lake may see 5-10 cm.

Residents are facing challenges due to the wet, heavy snow causing downed trees and branches. Stuart McDowell from The Pas mentioned the need for cleanup and assessment of damages around town. Northerly winds reaching 50-60 km/h are causing poor visibility and blowing snow, leading to highway closures.

Dan Fulton, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, stated that a storm originating from Montana transitioned into heavy snow over northern Manitoba, affecting road conditions and causing power outages. Elissa Bogdan, co-owner of Wekusko Falls Lodge, highlighted the need for extensive tree removal to reopen roads in the area. Power outages have impacted thousands of customers in different regions of Manitoba, with crews working to restore services.

Despite the challenges, some residents like Bogdan see a positive side to the storm, as it brings much-needed moisture after a dry summer and severe fire season. While the damage is significant, the moisture is appreciated.
