A new documentary sheds light on the inception of the Northern Super League as it prepares for its inaugural post-season. “The Pitch,” directed by Michele Hozer, delves into the behind-the-scenes journey of co-founders Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert, who transformed their Project 8 vision into a six-team pro league earlier this year.

The documentary captures the challenges and uncertainties faced by Matheson and Gilbert throughout the process, with Matheson expressing frustration at the prolonged period of uncertainty. Despite the obstacles, the film showcases the determination and support of Matheson, her wife Anastasia Bucsis, and the strategic thinking of Gilbert.

Hozer, known for her acclaimed works such as “Shake Hands with The Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire,” recognized the compelling narrative of Project 8 but faced financing hurdles until January 2025. The documentary also features poignant interviews with former players like Amy Walsh, highlighting the struggles faced by women in soccer, including discriminatory policies by Canada Soccer.

The film reflects Matheson’s emotional journey and the milestones achieved in bringing the league to life. It also praises the current CEO of Canada Soccer, Kevin Blue, for his efforts towards the league’s advancement. The narrative culminates in the successful launch of the Northern Super League, showcasing the perseverance and vision of its creators.
